Lead levels in dentine and circumpulpal dentine of deciduous teeth of normal and lead poisoned children.

چکیده
A method for the preparation of circumpulpal dentine for lead analysis is described. The technique consists of cutting 6oo-,L-thin sections of deciduous teeth, and, utilizing a vice, fracturing off the circumpulpal dentine from the coronal dentine. Both dentine and circumpulpal dentine of teeth of normal American children and previously identified lead-poisoned children were prepared in this fashion and analyzed for lead. Comparing the lead-poisoned teeth with normal teeth, the results indicate that a 6-fold difference in the mean lead content existed between the two groups. The uptake of lead by the two dentine zones at low levels of lead intake was also examined. Thus, comparing tooth lead levels of normal American and Icelandic children, 2-3 times less lead was found in the teeth of Icelandic children. The sensitivity of the dentinal zones for lead, the simplicity of the preparative method and the ease of collection of the teeth supports the use of teeth as useful indicators of previous lead exposure.

Lead exchange in teeth and bone--a pilot study using stable lead isotopes.
Stable lead isotopes and lead concentrations were measured in the enamel and dentine of permanent (n = 37) and deciduous teeth (n = 14) from 47 European immigrants to Australia to determine whether lead exchange occurs in teeth and how it relates to lead exchange in bone. Enamel exhibits no exchange of its European-origin lead with lead from the Australian environment. In contrast, dentine lead...
متن کاملReconstructing the life-time lead exposure in children using dentine in deciduous teeth.
Data are presented to demonstrate that the circumpulpal dentine of deciduous teeth can be used to reconstruct a detailed record of childhood exposure to lead. By combining high spatial resolution laser ablation ICP-MS with dental histology, information was acquired on the concentration of lead in dentine from in utero to several years after birth, using a true time template of dentine growth. T...
متن کاملEvidence of undue lead exposure in Cape Town before the advent of leaded petrol.
Lead concentrations were determined in the exhumed teeth of 28 people who lived in the Cape Town area before the combustion of leaded petrol (i.e. before 1922). The lead content of circumpulpal dentine was analysed by graphite-furnace atomic absorption spectrometry. The mean lead level in the dentine of primary teeth (N = 6) was 109 micrograms/g, while that in secondary teeth (N = 22) was 315 m...
متن کاملTooth analyses of sources and intensity of lead exposure in children.
The sources and intensity of lead exposure in utero and in early childhood were determined using stable lead isotopic ratios and lead concentrations of incisal and cervical sections of deciduous teeth from 30 exposed and nonexposed children from the Broken Hill lead mining community in Australia. Incisal sections, consisting mostly of enamel, generally have low amounts of lead and isotopic comp...
متن کاملPrenatal and postnatal manganese teeth levels and neurodevelopment at 7, 9, and 10.5 years in the CHAMACOS cohort.
BACKGROUND Numerous cross-sectional studies of school-age children have observed that exposure to manganese (Mn) adversely affects neurodevelopment. However, few prospective studies have looked at the effects of both prenatal and postnatal Mn exposure on child neurodevelopment. METHODS We measured Mn levels in prenatal and early postnatal dentine of shed teeth and examined their association w...
